Here in Novato, we have a company named BioMarin. At BioMarin they create biological solutions to some harsh illnesses. They do this by using proteins and enzymes to instruct the cells in your body to do what they were supposed to do. While we were there I was able to hold a small amount of proteins that are able to instruct the brain to continue growing someone’s arms and legs (Dwarfism). Their main goals include new biological cures, easy access to these cures, and the use of cells as their factories instead of a manufacturing plant. When I was there I learned about the level sophistication that it takes to find the exact protein. First they start with a small amount of immortal cells (cells that divide forever) and wait until they have a couple hundred liters of cells. Once that happened they had to find a way to instruct the cells on which protein they should produce. Finally they had to wait several weeks till it was ready for harvest. The extraction would involve trial and error to find a substance the one out of hundreds proteins, that one protein would stick to the substance. After that it would take trial and error to get the protein to disconnect from the substance.
